The Multi-ethnic Burmese Society of Finland (MEBSF), a non-political, non-profit organization, was established by the Burmese emigres in Helsinki, Finland, in the summer of 2006. In April 2007, it became the first Burmese organization registered under the Finnish Association Act in Finland.


Most of the members of the organization are ethnic Karenni people 'resettled' from Thailand to Finland. The MEBSF was founded with the following objectives:
1) to promote, facilitate and coordinate social and cultural activities of the Burmese people in Finland
2) to strenghen cultural ties and promote mutual understanding between the Finnish and the Burmese people
3) to facilitate the adaption and integration process of the members in Finland

The Charter of the MEBSF stipulates that MEBSF chair rotate each year to a different member so that each member can acquire management skills and leadership quality during her or his term as a chairperson. The first chair of the MEBSF went to Hti Aung Khaing (2006-2007). In September 2007, Ko Ko Thett was elected to chair the society.

Apart from routine cultural activities and parties for Christmas, New Year, and Burmese New Year, the MEBSF has been engaged in the following projects and activities since its formation:

2006-2007: Modelling of Orientation, Services and Traning related to the Resettlement and Reception of Refugees (MOST) in corporation with Finnish authorities and non-governmental organizations (see www.mostproject.fi for more info on MOST)

June 2007-June 2008: With MONIRINKI-HANKE (Project with Immigrant Association in Vantaa), InfoPiste (Information Centre for Burmese Immigrants in Vantaa)

14 November 2007: MEBSF hosts dinner to Burmese ethnic leaders Dr. Lian Sakhong and U Harn Yawnghwe who are in Helsinki for a Burma seminar

2008 New Year (30.12.2007-01.01.2008): New Year outing to Stockholm, Sweden, by Viking Cruise (more than 60 members, including many children, enjoyed the cruise and one-day guided bus tour of Stockholm City)

February-May 2008: English Course for MEBSF members at Silkinportti, Tikkurila

8 April 2008: Burmese Literature Evening at Caisa multicultural centre in Helsinki, London-based Burmese author Pascal Khoo-Thwe gives a lecture

12-13 April 2008: Burmese New Year outing to Jyväskylä, participated in the Burmese New Year festivities hosted by All Burma Nationalities Social Association ry, Jyväskylä

May 24-25 2008: Participated in World Village Festival, an annual festival of civil society organizations in Finland

May 2008:
As part of Finland-wide campaign by the Finnish Burmese Community, MEBSF members collect relief fund for the survivors of Cyclone Nargis in Burma. (In Helsinki alone the MEBSF raised 10124.65 Euros for the Red Cross Emergency Fund.)
